PPP nominates Sherry Rehman as Senate opposition leader

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has nominated Senator Sherry Rehman as the opposition leader in the upper house of the parliament.
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto summoned the meeting of the party leadership in Zardari House Islamabad. Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah and Sherry Rehman attended the meeting.
The Pakistan Tehreek-Insaf (PTI) which is the second biggest party of the opposition after PPP has also nominated Azam Sawati as its candidate for the opposition leader slot and had demanded of the opposition parties, including PPP, to support his candidature as the PPP has its deputy chairman in the upper house.
PPP, which has 20 seats in the Senate, will need the support of other opposition parties to have Rehman appointed. Opposition parties in the Senate did come together to get Sadiq Sanjrani elected chairman and Saleem Mandviwalla deputy chairman earlier this week.
Rehman, a senior figure in the PPP, has served as a senator since 2015 and was also Pakistan’s Ambassador to the US (2011-13) and Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting (2008-09) in the last government.
